Stiffest Elastic Networks

چکیده
The rigidity of a network of elastic beams crucially depends on the specific details of its structure. We show both numerically and theoretically that there is a class of isotropic networks which are stiffer than any other isotropic network with same density. The elastic moduli of these stiffest elastic networks are explicitly given. They constitute upper-bounds which compete or improve the well-known Hashin-Shtrikman bounds. We provide a convenient set of criteria (necessary and sufficient conditions) to identify these networks, and show that their displacement field under uniform loading conditions is affine down to the microscopic scale. Finally, examples of such networks with periodic arrangement are presented, in both two and three dimensions.

Mechanics of elastic networks.
We consider a periodic lattice structure in d=2 or 3 dimensions with unit cell comprising Z thin elastic members emanating from a similarly situated central node. A general theoretical approach provides an algebraic formula for the effective elasticity of such frameworks. The method yields the effective cubic elastic constants for three-dimensional space-filling lattices with Z=4, 6, 8, 12 and ...
متن کاملFaster strain fluctuation methods through partial volume updates.
Elastic systems that are spatially heterogeneous in their mechanical response pose special challenges for molecular simulations. Standard methods for sampling thermal fluctuations of a system's size and shape proceed through a series of homogeneous deformations, whose magnitudes can be severely restricted by its stiffest parts. Here we present a Monte Carlo algorithm designed to circumvent this...
متن کاملGelation and mechanical response of patchy rods.
We perform Brownian dynamics simulations to study the gelation of suspensions of attractive, rod-like particles. We show that in detail the rod-rod surface interactions can dramatically affect the dynamics of gelation and the structure and mechanics of the networks that form. If the attraction between the rods is perfectly smooth along their length, they will collapse into compact bundles. If t...
متن کاملHuman hopping on very soft elastic surfaces: implications for muscle pre-stretch and elastic energy storage in locomotion.
During hopping in place and running, humans maintain similar center of mass dynamics by precisely adjusting leg mechanics to compensate for moderate changes in surface stiffness. We investigated the limits of this precise control by asking humans to hop in place on extremely soft elastic surfaces. We found that hoppers drastically altered leg mechanics and maintained similar center of mass dyna...
متن کاملDisplacement Fields Influence Analysis Caused by Dislocation Networks at a Three Layer System Interfaces on the Surface Topology
This work consists in a numerically evaluation of elastic fields distribution, caused by intrinsic dislocation networks placed at a nanometric trilayers interfaces, in order to estimate their influence on the surface topology during heterostructure operation. The organization of nanostructures is ensured by the knowledge of different elastic fields caused by buried dislocation networks and calc...
